چکیده

In this study, the intensity of the asymmetrical tome neck reflex (ATNR) was measured in post-cerebrovascular accident (CVA) adults with hemiplegia and in neurologically intact adults to determine if the reflex exaggerated following CVA. Fourteen subjects with right and left hemiplegiC! were matched to neurologically intact subjects by age and sex and tested for the ATNR. Intensity of the reflex was measured using electromyography (EMG) biofeedback. The results indicate that no difference exists between the two groups in intensity of the reflex. The method of rotation used to elicit the reflex did significantly affect the strength of the muscle response. A possible explanation for observation of the reflex in the hemiplegic individual's movement and its significance in neuromuscular re-education programs is discussed. I t is known and accepted that a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) can disrupt normal sensorimotor integration within the nervous system, resulting in the widespread release of primitive postural reflexes, including the tonic neck reflexes (I, 2). However, the effect these reflexes have on the movement of the post-CV A patient and the potential for recovery of normal function is less clearly understood.

Summary of Seminar

Dr. Hawke emphasized that repeated examinations, flexible approach, and obser vation were particularly important in the neurobogic examination of the infant and child. A formal adult-like neurologic cx amination was impossible uintil later child hood. Transient infantile reflexes such as the Mono reflex, the palmar-grasp reflex, an(1 tonic neck reflex usually disappear by 3 to 4 months of age. ...

Tonic and reflex control of the cardio-respiratory system by neurons in the ventral medulla

To investigate the channels and neurotransmitters in the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) oblongata that are responsible for the maintenance of sympathetic tone and cardio-respiratory reflex regulation. Microinjections of excitant amino acid (glutamate, 100 nl, 100 mM), calcium channel blockers, agonists and antagonists were made throughout the VLM in anaesthetized rats. Arterial blood pressure, sym...

The Correlation between Primitive Reflexes and Saccadic Eye Movements in 5th Grade Children with Teacher-Reported Reading Problems

Optometry & Vision Development ABSTRACT Background: The association between the primitive reflexes of vestibular origin and the developmental control of ocular movements has been of interest to many. The objective of the present study was to determine the association, if any, between any remaining primitive reflexes and saccadic eye movements in 5th grade children with teacherreported reading p...
